SAN JOSE — Live Oak’s top boys single, Johann Christ Abordo, showed he can win in the clutch, too.

Abordo stayed perfect on the season with a three-set victory over Long Vo in a decisive match Monday, and the Acorns edged Branham 8-7 in a West Valley Division badminton match in San Jose.

Live Oak ended the first half of league play 5-3, while the Bruins fell to 4-4.

After splitting the first two sets, Abordo had a flashback to last year, when he fell to Vo in three sets. Live Oak coach Bharat Poria talked him through his game strategy, though, and Abordo prevailed in the final set to win 15-10, 11-15, 15-9.

The Acorns entered the match down two forfeited matches, but received a huge lift from their girls, who won all of their matches.

In her varsity debut, Lindsey Pisciotta remained calm with the help of her veteran partner Ada Tan. They helped round out an Acorns sweep in girls doubles play.

Live Oak Nos. 1-2 girls singles, Sara Ann Garber and Emily Mandel, won in swift fashion; and sisters Sayuri and Naromy Ramirez triumphed in their respective girls and mixed doubles matches.

On the boys side, Live Oak’s Owen Frederick lost in three sets, and Addien Wray and Peter Mains moved to 6-2 with a hard-fought victory, 15-7, 7-15, 15-10, in the top boys doubles match.

The Acorns have two more road contests this week, starting Wednesday against Archbishop Mitty and Friday against San Jose.
