Parents looking for ideas have lots of options, starting with the three recreational and community centers in Morgan Hill.
At the Aquatic Center, kids can take swimming lessons or just play on the water features. Kids can also swim at the Centennial Recreation Center, and there are a number of different classes involving fitness and fun that kids can sign up for throughout the summer.
One of the popular city summer programs is the “Cool Kids” camp, which runs 9am to 4pm, Monday through Friday, with extended care available, until Aug. 3.
Kids ages 41/2 to 11 will spend Mondays and Wednesdays at the Community and Cultural Center, Tuesdays at the Aquatics Center, Thursdays at the Centennial Recreation Center in a variety of structured and unstructured activities. Fridays, Cool Kids campers will go on field trips to different fun spots, including the Oakland Zoo and the Santa Cruz Boardwalk.
To register for Cool Kids, visit the Web site at www.active.com/browse/morganhill, or visit any of the three locations.
Teen programs, including a variety of classes, are also available through the city’s summer recreation program. Registration and more information is available at City Hall and the three city facilities.
Another option to keep kids – from grade school to high school – happy and busy during the summer months is signing them up for one or more of the many sports camps at Live Oak High School.
The week-long camps run through Aug. 10 and cover a wide spectrum of sports.
This week, there are camps for badminton, indoor soccer, speed and agility and tennis, but there are no camps next week due to the Independence Day holiday.
The week of July 9-13, there is an all-sports camp, and the following week, July 16-20, kids can participate in girls basketball, track, touch rugby, speed and agility and tennis.*Another all-sports camp plus a diving camp will be held July 23-27 at Live Oak. The next week, July 30-Aug. 3, there’s a final all-sports camp, and rounding out the summer, Aug. 6-10, there are several camps to choose from, including field hockey, volleyball, lacrosse, speed and agility and tennis.
Live Oak High School Athletic Director Mark Cummins is coordinating the camps. He said all camps focus on the sports and teaching life lessons to participants such as positive attitude, sportsmanship, proper nutrition and the importance of good study habits and grades.
