RELIEF WORK

Last Saturday, May 10, 1906, a telegram was received from Mr. Schillingsburg of the Southern Pacific in San Jose, asking how many refugees from San Francisco could be taken care of in Morgan Hill. A meeting was at once called for 2 p.m. in Yeoman Hall. At that hour a large number assembled, and the meeting was organized with Dr. J. T. Higgins in the chair and Prin. W. W. Pettit as secretary. Numerous offers were made to take from 1 to 4 in private families and to house and feed them one or two weeks. Many offered shelter who could not provide food. A list of all these parties was made and placed in the hands of a relief committee of seven, chosen by the meeting, of which L. Cunningham was to be chairman. The other members as chosen were: Rev. W. R. Gordon, M. M. Gilchrist, M. R. Payne, Mrs. O. J. Ward, A. S. Votaw and Mrs. A. McAnney.

L. Cunningham offered the use of the Griffin and Skelly packing house. Mrs. Oldham offered the use of her north store room. C. Averill offered the use of a number of cots and mattresses and many others offered bedding and supplies of all kinds.

Immediately after the close of the meeting the relief committee was called together by chairman Cunningham, M. M. Gilchrist was chosen secretary.

After careful consideration the offer of the packing house was accepted for a lodging place and the store room for a cooking and dining room, and before night both places were ready for use.

Dr. Hulet and Mrs. McAnney were placed in charge of the packing house and all arrangements were made ready for duty. But little work has fallen to the share of this committee, the needy ones being mostly cared for in the large centers.

There is but little to add to the story of loss in this county, to what was given last week. The property loss in Gilroy was largely over estimated. The amount is now stated to be about $50,000 or less. The loss at Stanford is not as sweeping as at first reported. Other places as about reported.
