Friday, Nov. 5 was Dominic Bejarano’s 17th birthday.
For the Live Oak High School senior and quarterback, it was Bejarano’s first time back on the field since suffering a concussion two weeks prior.
Before the game, Bejarano taped his cleats. On the left, he wrote “GG, 11-4-2010”, short for his great grandmother Delores Alexander, 87, who died Nov. 4.
On the left cleat, he wrote “GW, 11-5-2010,” short for “Grandpa Walsh,” in memory of his grandfather Michael Walsh, who died Nov. 5.
Bejarano scored four touchdowns that night.
Andria Souza, 30, Walsh’s youngest daughter, said her father had been terribly worried about his grandson.
“That was his first game back since the concussion,” said Souza. “And my dad had been so scared. And then Dominic ended up having the best game of his life.”
After each touchdown, Bejarano got down on one knee and made the sign of the cross.
Souza said her other nephew Tyler Geer, a 15-year-old sophomore who plays offensive line for Live Oak, also had an incredible game, making multiple blocks that led to Bejarano’s touchdowns.
“We believe my dad was with them both, protecting them and giving them strength and motivation to have such an amazing game,” said Souza.
