Excellence revealed on Feb. 2
Leadership Morgan Hill (LMH) once a year selects a member or members of the Morgan Hill community to be recognized and celebrated for their sustained leadership that improves our community. This year the Leadership Excellence Award honoree or honorees will be announced at a “Reveal” event to be held at Guglielmo Winery from 5:30-7pm Feb. 2, says a press release from LMH. Wine, beer and appetizers will be served and attendees will be challenged to identify the recipient or recipients while learning about them in a fun way.
The event is free. Guglielmo Winery is located at 1480 East Main Ave. in Morgan Hill
The Leadership Excellence Award will be presented at LMH’s , the press release continues. Information on reservations and the gala theme will be announced later this spring.
Moeder makes Dean’s List
Sabrina Moeder, a Morgan Hill resident and Ann Sobrato High School graduate, was named to the Drury University Dean’s List for the fall 2022 semester, says a press release from the university. Making Dean’s List means a student earned a grade point average of 3.6 or greater (on a 4-point scale) while carrying a full-time course load of 12 or more semester hours at Drury, a top Midwestern university, according to US News & World Report.
Nguyen earns Dean’s List honors
Natalie Nguyen, of Morgan Hill, was named to the Lehigh University Dean’s List for the fall 2022 semester, says a press release. Dean’s List honors are awarded to students who earned a scholastic average of 3.6 or better while carrying at least 12 hours of coursework for the semester.
Local students recognized at SNHU
Two locals were named to Southern New Hampshire University’s Fall 2022 President’s List.
The fall terms run from September to December.
The students are:
• Shantell Schweikart of Morgan Hill
• Christopher Smith of San Martin
Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.700 and above for the reporting term are named to the President’s List.

Spring named Morgan Hill Mayor Pro Tem
Morgan Hill City Councilmember Rene Spring was appointed as the city’s Mayor Pro Tempore at the Jan. 12 council meeting. The council voted unanimously to appoint Spring for the seat, whose primary responsibility includes serving as Mayor of Morgan Hill in the elected mayor’s absence.
A brief discussion began with a nomination by Spring to appoint Councilmember Marilyn Librers—who was elected in the Nov. 8 election—as mayor pro tempore. Spring noted that because Librers previously served on the city council, she is qualified for the position.
Librers, however, “respectfully declined” because it has been four years since she was on the council, and “some things are new to me and I’m still getting my feet wet.” Librers previously sat on the Morgan Hill City Council from 2012-2018.
Librers at the Jan. 12 meeting then nominated Spring for mayor pro tem—a selection that the council adopted unanimously.
The mayor pro tempore serves a one-year term. The council is tasked with appointing one of its four district members for the seat each year.
For several years, the council has followed a non-binding policy to select the city’s mayor pro tem on a rotating basis determined by two criteria: how long a member has served on the council; and whether the nominee has previously served as mayor pro tem, according to a city staff report.
This year is Spring’s turn in the rotation, based on those criteria.
Council to consider Housing Element
The Morgan Hill City Council at the Jan. 25 meeting will consider adoption of the city’s 2023-31 draft Housing Element, a long-term planning document that guides how Morgan Hill will meet the community’s housing needs as Morgan Hill grows.
City planners and officials have been working on the 2023-31 element for the past year, implementing an outreach and engagement program to ask and inform residents and property owners about what housing should look like in Morgan Hill’s future, says a press release from the City of Morgan HIll. The Jan. 25 City Council meeting will take place in person and online at Council Chambers, 17575 Peak Ave., starting at 7pm.
The Housing Element is one of nine state-mandated elements that must be included in every city’s General Plan. The Housing Element assesses housing needs for all income groups within the city, and identifies implementation programs to meet those needs for the next eight years.

Ramirez initiated into Omicron Delta Kappa
Victoria Ramirez, a native of Morgan Hill, was recently initiated into the Arizona State University Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society.
The Society welcomed 646 new initiates from 23 universities during December 2022, says a press release.
Students initiated into the Society must be sophomores, juniors, seniors or graduate and professional students in the top 35% of their class, who demonstrate leadership experience in at least one of the five pillars and embrace the ODK ideals, says the release. Fewer than 5% of students on a campus are invited to join each year.
Locals named to President’s List

Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.700 and above for the reporting term are named to the President’s List, says a press release from the university. Full-time status is achieved by earning 12 credits over each 16-week term or paired 8-week terms grouped in fall, winter/spring, and summer.
IRS extends deadline for counties in emergency
The Internal Revenue Service has extended its annual tax return due date by a month for people who live in areas impacted by the recent storms, the IRS announced on Jan. 10.
California storm victims now have until May 15 to file their individual or business taxes if their area was declared an emergency by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The announcement affects residents in Alameda, Marin, Contra Costa, San Francisco, Monterey, Napa, San Joaquin, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano and Sonoma counties, the IRS said. A full list of counties can be found at https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/tax-relief-in-disaster-situations.
Eligible taxpayers will also have until May 15 to make 2022 contributions to their IRAs and health savings accounts.
Taxpayers will not have to do anything to initiate the extension, the IRS said, and do not have to contact the agency to get this relief.
Some other extensions are being granted to farmers, those who pay quarterly estimated payments, and those who pay quarterly payroll and excise taxes. To learn more, go to irs.gov.
