THIS WEEK’S QUESTION:

“Do you believe that Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Cambridge, Mass. police Sgt. James Crowley will successfully put aside their differences at a meeting with Barack Obama?” Yes: 10 No: 0

? Karen Anderson: “Yes. Obama has to make it happen after his knee jerk reaction to the news. He should have waited to comment until all the facts were in.”

? Chris Bryant: “I believe they will put on an appropriate face for political necessity. I still think that Obama made a gross mistake in commenting on something of which he had only cursory knowledge. As president and someone with legal education, he should know better.”

? David Cohen: “Yes, between the two of them. But the larger racial issue will remain.”

? Dennis Kennedy: “Yes! Unless they have too many beers. Then it might end up like a meeting at an Irish pub (a fight!).”

? Julian Mancias: “Yes. The whole incident was blown out of proportion in the first place.”

? Linda McNulty: “Yes, I suppose it can’t hurt, but it is unsettling that Obama is involved in this process.”

? Henry Miller: “Yes. The prestige and influence of an American president should and would have a positive effect on almost anyone, regardless of political leaning. And joining in a beer or two certainly won’t hurt.”

? Lisa Pampuch: “They’ll all make nice, but the problems that the entire episode spotlighted – race, police discretion, mistrust – remain difficult and unresolved.”

? John Quick: “Yes I do. It serves no one to hold on to resentments which are so small compared to the national spotlight that is on them. It is sad that Obama chose to comment at all.”

? Emily Shem-Tov: “Yes, I think both want to get past this incident. Out of the heat of the moment (and into the national spotlight), both should be able to set it aside and at least agree to disagree more reasonably.”
