Do you agree with Pres. Obama’s decision to cut the manned moon
missions from NASA’s budget?
THIS WEEK’S QUESTION:
“Do you agree with Pres. Obama’s decision to cut the manned moon missions from NASA’s budget?
” Yes: 10 No: 2
? Karen Anderson: “Yes. Political times have changed: While the old space program fueled the Silicon Valley tech industry, we now need to figure out first what our long term goals are in space vis-a-vis our economy.”
? Dave Appling: Yes, but: They should remain in the ‘program’ (i.e., post-budget) years, and there should be sufficient budget provided to keep the Lunar and Mars mission teams together. This work is what NASA should be doing, even if the resources aren’t there now.”
? Bert Berson: “Yes. Allocating resources this way will lead to more effective space programs.”
? David Cohen: “At first glance, no. Manned space flight are important vehicles for the technology innovation. However, I will wait and see if private companies step up to fill the void.”
? Dennis Kennedy: “Yes! This is one expenditure that can wait.”
? Julian Mancias: “No. Not only will this cut jobs, but the space industry has always been on the cutting edge of technology.”
? Linda McNulty: “Yes, bring free market capitalism to the space program.”
? Henry Miller: “As difficult as it is to say by someone who was involved in past space efforts, I think our economic situation is so dire that we must defer even the most interesting space adventures.”
? Lisa Pampuch: “While I support NASA funding in principle, it seems this program, which was late, over budget, not aligned with national priorities and using outdated technology, was a wise one to cut.”
? Emily Shem-Tov: “Yes, while it is sad to give up that part of the space dream and the technological advances it might result in, it could stimulate commercial spaceflight.”
? Jeff Smith: “I do. I think the private sector can take this over very nicely, and we can spend those dollars elsewhere.”
? Steve Staloch: “It is a refreshing and rare demonstration of leadership from an administration that quickly learned to do the Washington Two Step – protecting the status quo and sacred cows like NASA.”
