Are some Winter Olympic sports too dangerous?
THIS WEEK’S QUESTION:
“Are some Winter Olympic sports too dangerous?
” Yes: 4 No: 8
? Karen Anderson: “Yes. Many are, especially if a head injury is a distinct possibility. In Vancouver’s case, officials have modified the track, basically admitting it was too dangerous.”
? Dave Appling: “I don’t think so. Olympians are pros or highly experienced amateurs; they know the risks. The tragic death of the Kartveli (Georgian) luger calls not for elimination, but for better safety engineering of luge facilities.”
? Chris Bryant: “No, athletes know the risks and take tons of precautions. Accidents happen, but no more often than getting injured in a traffic accident.”
? David Cohen: “No. The athletes are trained and experienced in the risks and as with other accidents, a sudden lack of attention can result in unforeseen tragic consequences.”
? Dennis Kennedy: “Yes! More safety requirements and controls are needed.”
? Julian Mancias: “Yes. The sleds go too fast. They should put restricter plates like NASCAR.” n Linda McNulty: “Yes, some Olympic sports are more dangerous than others, therefore, extra precautions need to be mandated.”
? Henry Miller: “No! When athletes push their limits, sometimes they exceed their capabilities and accidents happen. Understanding the course limits, as well their own limits, are essential to avoid injuries.”
? Lisa Pampuch: “No. All of life – even riding in a vehicle, something most of us do every day – involves risk. Eliminating all risk from life is impossible, and the effort saps joy from living.”
? Emily Shem-Tov: “All sports can be dangerous and involve risk – but all measures should be taken to make sure that the conditions are as safe as they can be for the people involved.”
? Jeff Smith: “I think you have to be half crazy, half thrill-seeker to do some of those events, but I would not consider banning them because they’re too dangerous. I’m sure all the participants are well aware of the potential risks involved in their respective sports.”
? Steve Staloch: “No.”
