A San Jose woman’s tire went flat as she drove her SUV toward Gilroy on Highway 152, causing her to roll the vehicle, which partially blocked traffic for about a half hour. She and her passenger suffered only minor injuries.
Maria Ester Fula, 66, was driving a 1997 Ford Explorer westbound near Bell Station, east of Casa de Fruta, about 11:30am Wednesday when the left rear tire went flat, according to a California Highway Patrol report. Fula, who was in the left lane, first attempted to park near the center divider, said Officer Matt Ramirez. After seeing there was not enough room, she then veered to the right, but the lack of pressure in the tire caused the Explorer to veer sharply to the right, up a raised dirt embankment on the right-hand shoulder.
The Explorer rolled over once and came to rest on its left side, partially blocking the right lane of traffic. The lane was closed for about 30 minutes while emergency responders tended to Fula and Antonio Fula, 72, a passenger.
The Fulas were flown by Stanford Life Flight to Stanford University Medical Center, but mostly as a precaution, Ramirez said. They were wearing their seat belts and were saved from major injury, but had some complaints of pain.
