Dear Editor,

I would like to make a comment on this issue of fake guns and the teenagers that have been in the newspaper. What will it take to get the parents, who obviously aren’t getting the clue, to realize that one of these days their child is going to get shot “playing a game” or pretending to be “Cops”?

One evening a very long time ago when my boys were “playing” in the neighborhood with their toy guns, I believe they were around 10 and 11 years old, Officer Troy knocked on my door with my boys and their toy guns in hand. He told me that it was very dangerous for them to be playing out in the darkness with the guns even though they were painted with orange on the nose end of the barrel, that an Officer wouldn’t be able to see in the dark, and that they could be shot in self-defense if they were pointing the guns at them!

After that the only guns that were allowed in the house were bright green and orange plastic see-through squirt guns! Officer Troy asked if he could take the real looking guns that my boys had. Of course I let him take them, much to the complaints of my kids. Better to have my kids mad at me than to have them dead.

Price of a fake gun: $20 to $85

Price of your child’s life: Priceless
