Girls remain perfect after winning the Wahine Classic

The Live Oak girls water polo team continued to look strong, improving to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the Tri-County Athletic League after winning the Wahine Classic over the weekend.

Chelsea Lanning, in the 2-meter spot, led the scoring throughout and also had several assists.

“You could tell we got better each game of the tournament,” said coach Bryan Traverso. “Overall I saw some great things. Our 6-on-5 was awesome. I thought our defense played great. Also we did a great job of getting the ball to our 2-meter players, who I think performed great this weekend.”

The first game was against Salinas, a game in which the Acorns won 12-5. The leading scorers were Chelsea Lanning with five goals and Ronni Gautschi with four. Jessica Kapetanic, Jessilyn Haines and Breanna Sennert each had one. Danielle Maldonado had seven saves to keep the Acorns in the game.

“Though we won, I thought we played very sloppy, especially in the first half,” Traverso said. “We missed a lot of shots, turned the ball over numerous times and just did not look very crisp.”

On Saturday, Live Oak defeated Monterey 17-4 in the first game.

The leading scorers were Lanning with eight goals, Gautschi with four and Kapetanic with two. Laura Melroy, Stevenson and Sennert each had one. Maldonado had eight saves.

“In the first quarter, I thought we played one of the best quarters we have played all year and played much better than we did on Tuesday when we played Monterey,” Traverso said. “Our passing and shooting were tremendous and so was our defense.”

In the championship game, Live Oak defeated Leland 16-6. Lanning scored seven goals, Melroy had four, Sennert had three goals and Gautschi had two.

Maldonado came up with saves.

“This was our best game of the tournament,” Traverso said. “Our 6-on-5 offense and defense were spectacular and our passing was great. That was the best our team has shot this year. I was really happy with that game.”
