A less well-known title is the Mayo Clinic Complete Book of Pregnancy & Baby’s First Year (c. 1994). This is still one of the most comprehensive reference sources for expectant parents.

Before registering at BabysRUs, check out Baby Bargains: Secrets for Saving 20-50 percent on Baby Furniture, Equipment, Clothes, Toys, Maternity Wear, and Much, Much More! (c. 2002). This book can not only help you save money, it also provides crucial information on the safety and quality of important purchases, such as car seats.

An easy-to-read guide to postnatal and prenatal stimulation and education is provided in Smart-Wiring Your Baby’s Brain: What You Can Do to Stimulate Your Child During the Critical First Three Years (c. 2001).

To get ready for baby, read Dr. Spock’s Baby & Child Care (c. 1998). This last edition incorporates a lifetime of wisdom and recent research on child care.

A great book for couples to read together is Your Pregnancy Week by Week (c. 2002). The importance of the prenatal and early childhood environments is the subject of Super Baby: Boost Your Baby’s Potential from Conception to Year One (c. 1998).

A critical view of the baby industry is provided in Naomi Wolf’s Misconceptions: Truth, Lies and the Unexpected on the Way to Motherhood.

The library also carries a wide selection of videos for parents-to-be.

Exercise videos include Prenatal Yoga with Colette Crawford (VHS, c. 1996), which uses traditional yoga postures, adapted for pregnancy.

Having Your Baby (VHS, various eds.) teaches Lamaze childbirth methods. Expectant parents can learn how to help their infants reach their full potential in Rob Reiner’s The First Years Last Forever: I Am Your Child (VHS, c. 1997).

The library also carries many popular titles from the Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy (c. 1999) to Kathy Smith’s Pregnancy Workout (VHS, c. 1989).
