The Live Oak varsity team came away with a rare 15-10, 15-7, 12-15, 15-13 win in the annual alumni male volleyball game last week. Normally the game is dominated by the alumni, but not this year.
“Most of the them are on top of their game and are playing better than in high school,” said Live Oak coach John Telfer. “The team concept wasn’t there, but the guys were still playing well. Some haven’t played since the last alumni game. They just didn’t have good coaching over there. As the game went on, some of the guys who were rusty started to get it back.”
There were 11 guys who showed up for the alumni.
“I don’t think our guys were ready for the trash talking of the 2000 team,” Telfer said. “They were cocky then and still are now. The 2000 team is talented, but is getting older. If they played as a team, they would have given us a run.”
Joe Ramirez, who was part of the 2000 team that went undefeated in league, was the captain of the alumni team. Twins Neil and Nick Oza contributed for the alumni with their strong digging. J. Gaish had some great hops in the middle.
Two of the power hitters on the alumni team were Kevin Corrall and Danny Chan, who is the brother of varsity player Samson. Corrall and Chan were getting being set early on until the Acorns figured out how to block them. Both players are playing on the San Jose State Club team.
Another strong returner was coach Telfer’s oldest son Matt, who plays intramural volleyball at UC Davis.
Two of the players who didn’t attend are Jon Kewish, who is in Brazil, and Brian Murdock, who was part of the original Live Oak volleyball team that was formed about seven years ago.
The Acorns will resume league play this week with home games against Salinas on Wednesday and against Gilroy on Friday. Both Gilroy and Live Oak are undefeated in league.
