Baseball

SALINAS –– The Live Oak baseball team defeated Palma 9-0 on Thursday to move into sole possession of first place in the Tri-County Athletic League behind the complete game performance of Ryan Muller.

Hollister (11-4, 6-2 TCAL) lost to Salinas 10-6 Thursday and dropped into second place.

Muller struck out nine batters while scattering three hits for the Acorns.

The only real threat Palma mounted was in the fourth inning with runners on first and third. But shortstop Dave Newton caught a hard line drive and threw to third to get the over zealous runner.

The Acorns (12-4, 7-1 TCAL) played an error -free game. First baseman Kyle Bennett had four snags and tosses to Muller covering for outs.

Live Oak scored four runs in the second inning on a leadoff double by Muller, a walk to Sean Nourie and a bunt down the third-base line by Bryan Jones. With one out, Bennett doubled to left center to score two runs. Trevor Molyneaux singled to plate Jones. Andrew Cummins had a sacrifice fly to left.

The Acorns added two more runs in the third inning off a triple by Nourie with two outs. Nourie scored on a pop up dropped by the third base man. The second run moved to second third and home on three wild pitches.

Live Oak got one run in the fifth in as Muller led off with a single and stole second. He scored on a two-out single by Chase Perez.

Cummins and Jared Kwock added RBI singles in the seventh inning.

“We’re playing extremely well right now,” said Live Oak coach Mark Cummins. “Up and down the lineup we are all swinging well. We had great pitching and outstanding defense.”

The Acorns will play at Gilroy on Tuesday, and then Gilroy comes to Live Oak on Friday. With the time change, games now start at 4 p.m.
