I want to talk about the putter today. The putter will turn a poor scoring round into a decent scoring round faster than any other club in your bag.
For example, on a par four you can miss three shots and be 60 feet from the hole and still make the putt for a par.
How many times have you heard a commentator on TV say a par save can feel just as good as a birdie or can save a round from going into the dumper?
The short game is the key to scoring. That is how the touring professionals can come in after a 69 and say “I didn’t have my ‘A’ game today, but I just hung in there and took what the golf course gave me.” If you want to score lower, spend more time putting and chipping.
Make sure you adhere to the fundamentals. Keep your eyes directly over the ball. Use a pendulum stroke with the putter going straight back on the intended line and straight through the ball on the same line. Like a pendulum use the same pace going back as you would going through. Stand tall so that it is easier to use your shoulders and arms not your hands and wrist. Putt more, score lower.
