More than 350,000 notices are being mailed to Californians who failed to file their 2001 state income tax returns, according to the Franchise Tax Board (FTB).
“Most Californians file their tax returns and pay on time,” stated State Controller and FTB Chair Steve Westly. “I strongly urge those who didn’t file to comply with the notice.
Those who earned California income, but did not file, will get a notice asking about their return. Each year, the FTB receives more than 160 million income records from third parties such as banks, employers, the Internal Revenue Service, and other sources. The FTB matches these income records against the records of tax returns filed.
The FTB has a Website for those who receive notices, ftb.ca.gov/inc, where they can download tax forms, find answers to frequently asked questions, request more time to respond, and reply to the notice. The FTB’s main Website, www.ftb.ca.gov , allows individuals to e-file their returns, view their account status, or pay their taxes electronically.
Those who cannot pay their taxes in full can also request an installment agreement online. Call (800) 852-5711, a customer service representative.
