Manuel Cardoso Silva of San Jose died May 17, 2003. Mr. Silva,
92, was born in the Azores Islands. He came to the United States in
1968 and has lived locally for 32 years. In the Azores he was a
farmer and blacksmith.

Mr. Silva, 92, was born in the Azores Islands. He came to the United States in 1968 and has lived locally for 32 years. In the Azores he was a farmer and blacksmith. He was known and respected throughout the Azores Islands for his ability to hand make tools and farm implements. He came to the United States to give his family a better future. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends in San Jose and attending Portuguese celebrations and family gatherings. All who knew him will dearly miss him.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Manuel Fernando and Manuela Silva of Portugal; son and daughter-in-law Jose Cardoso and Fernanda Silva of Canada; daughter and son-in-law Estela and Joe Bettencourt of Canada; son and daughter-in-law Tony and Natalia Silva of Morgan Hill; daughter and son-in-law Maria Adelaide and Manuel Melo of San Martin; daughter and son-in-law, Fernanda “Fern” and Albert Gomes of Hollister; and son Frank Silva of San Jose.

Mr. Silva is the brother of Francisco Silva of Azores, Portugal, and Maria Do Rosario Silva of Azores. He also is survived by 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Silva was preceded in death by his wife, Isaura Silva.

Funeral Mass was Thursday at at Five Wounds, Portuguese National Church, 1401 Santa Clara St., San Jose, followed by burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, San Jose.

Arrangements were by Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.
