Local volleyball player leads Bellarmine to title

Bellamine College Prep defeated Valley Christian 15-9, 14-16, 15-13, 15-9 to win the Central Coast Section volleyball tournament.

Morgan Hill resident ant two-year starter Mitch Katz played defensive specialist for the victorious Bells, which finished the year with a record of 26-4.

The title is Bellarmine’s fifth CCS volleyball championship in the seven years volleyball has been a Northern California sport.

Katz, a senior who will be attending San Diego in the fall, also played on the Bellarmine soccer team that finished second in CCS earlier this year.

The Ghost puts it all on the line in big fight

Robert ‘The Ghost’ Guerrero will step back in the ring June 8 for a nationally televised 10-round bout – scheduled to air Sunday at 6 p.m. on Fox Sports Net – when the top featherweight contender puts his undefeated record of 10-0 with three knockouts on the line.

Guerrero – who recorded a first-round knockout in his latest May 4 victory – will go up against former Mexican Champ Jose Luis Tula (15-7) in the semi-main event at the Texas Station in Las Vegas.

“He’s a real solid guy,” said manager Bob Santos of Tula. “He’s a real durable guy who’s only been stopped twice.”

In Tula’s last fight, he lost by decision to William Medalian, a top 10 ranked boxer in every major boxing organization. But Tula threatened for the upset knockout in the final round, according to Santos.

“He’s training in LA with his father and Joe Goossen, a Hall of Fame trainer. He’s really getting him prepared,” said Santos of Guerrero. “He’s out here sparring with the best fighters in the world.”

The Gilroy was highlighted on Fox Sports Net commercial spots last Sunday for his upcoming fight – being tagged as a top young gun in boxing.

“Fox Sports Net is really starting to get behind him,” Santos said. “We’re starting to push him and move him up in the rankings.”
