The rains are ending and the flowers are blooming. It is time to clean off the grill and prepare for your season of barbecue adventures. Whether you use a gas grill or charcoal, make the library your first stop for some new tips on barbecue cookery.

If you are looking for your first barbecue or planning to replace one, many books have tips on purchasing a barbecue and assorted barbecue related gadgets.

The Best Recipe: Grilling & Barbecue by the editors of Cook’s Magazine, Born to Grill by Cheryl and Bill Jamison, and The Barbecue Bible by Steven Raichlen can help you decide whether you want a charcoal or gas grill, how to start charcoal with chimney starters or electric starters, how to check the gas level in the tank, etc. Find out about grill brushes, tongs, fish baskets, misters, skewers and other gadgets to meet your grilling needs.

Once you have your barbecue set up, and all your favorite gadgets ready, it’s time to get cooking.

For the beginning griller, you can find basic barbecue instructions in Barbecues 101 by Rick Rogers, Grill it Right by Better Homes and Gardens or in Sunset’s Ultimate Grill Book. For a retro approach to the grill, Patio Daddy-O will provide tips to create a family barbecue with a 50s theme.

If you are an experienced griller, this may be the year to broaden your barbecue repertoire.

Try Barbecue Sauces, Rubs, and Marinades, Bastes, Butters & Glazes, by Steven Raichlen, Douglas Rodriguez’s Latin flavors on the Grill, The Southwestern Grill by Michael Mclaughlin, or Pacific Grilling by Denis Kelly.

Whether you choose a recipe of Yucatan Chicken with Guacamole, Ahi Skewers with Miso-Sesame Crust, Brined and Stuffed Double Pork Chops, Whole Beef Tenderloin with Papaya Relish or simply grill some Ball Park franks, new summer grilling ideas are waiting for you at the library.

You can find books on barbecuing under the subject heading “barbecue cookery”. To search the library catalog from home, go to the library web page at www.santaclaracountylib.org, click on “search our web catalog”, arrow down to subject keyword and type in “barbecue cookery”.
