SANTA CLARA – The Live Oak boys and girls swim teams finished strong in the Central Coast Section playoffs held last weekend at the Santa Clara Swim Complex.
The Live Oak boys team placed 17th out of 36 schools, and the girls finished 32nd overall. The highlight of the meet was the automatic All-American qualifying time of junior David Dunn in the 100-yard breast stroke. Dunn finished in second place with a time of 58.63. The qualifying time needed was 58.84.
His fourth-place finish in the100-yard butterfly swim with a time of 52.18 earned him a consideration for High School All-American. He will have to wait to see if he is one on the top 50 swims in the country for this school year in this event.
“Dunn has been routinely spectacular at meets,” said Live Oak boys coach Mack Haines. “He is just a joy to watch swim. His gracefulness makes it seem effortless. David is just a naturally gifted swimmer. That is Division 1 scholarship material, and it sets him apart as a very elite type of athlete. He takes the whole thing in stride and remains humble.”
The young boys relay team of Dunn, Ryan Gautschi, Travis Aviles and Shea Coleman won took 13th place in the 200-yard relay.
“The whole team is coming back next year,” Haines said. “That will only make us better. I think that (the success in the meet) will carry over for both boys and girls teams. We’ve had a couple tough years by Live Oak’s standards. But I think we will come back strong and turn the corner.”
Three Live Oak girls had three relay teams qualify for CCS. The team of Susan Suchomel, Laura Melroy, Amy Marshall and Ronni Gautschi finished 14th in the 200-freestyle event.
“I think overall this year, at least from a logistically standout, it really turned out great,” Haines said. “It helped to be in our own pool and use our own facilities. The scoring system made it a breeze to hold swim meets.
“We have some ninth and tenth graders dedicated to swimming,” Haines added. “We lost a little bit in the last two years during the senior transitions. I think it will pickup, and things will get even better.”
