Spirit Softball heats up as season winds down
Junior Division
Meteors 3, Asteroids 1
The Meteors had virtually a perfect game against the Asteroids. Melanie Menage and Nestley Combs combined to throw a no-hitter against the Asteroids.
The Meteors jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a single by Nestley Combs, two stolen bases and an RBI by Amber Fearnside. A single by Katie Machado, another stolen base and some great base running scored Machado from second on a single by Emily Malech.
Menage struck out three Asteroids in her two innings pitching, and some excellent fielding by the whole Meteors team kept the perfect game alive through the first two innings.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Meteors scored again on a single by Abby Reynolds a stolen base and a clutch double by Brittney Purcell.
Nestley Combs took over as pitcher for the Meteors in the third. In the last inning, the Asteroids got a runner on first on an error.
Major Division
Lions 6, Bobcats 5
Tanya Ferry, Chere’Rae Prejean and Diana Carter each hit singles to put the Lions in the game after the Bobcats had a strong first inning. Courtney Bustillos crushed a double and brought in one run, and Sarah Cornaggia hit a triple to bring the crowd to its feet.
Olivia Pereira and Chere’Rae Prejean each caught a fly out. Both Prejean and Ferry continued the Lions awesome defense by assisted outs at first. Diana Carter, the catcher, had a put out at second base and made an outstanding unassisted out at home plate.
The Lions were able to score the runner from third.
Senior Division
Hurricanes 9, Tornados 2
In a dynamic matchup between two great teams, the Tornados and the Hurricanes squared off for the second playoff game on the Hurricane schedule.
Kelly McDonald sent a shot to the outfield to score Jay Jennings for the first tally of the game in the first inning. The Hurricanes played solid defense to escape the inning untouched. The second inning went quickly, with both sides getting three quick outs and no runs scored.
Tricia Goularte continued her strong performance on the mound to end the top of the third in short order. Melanie Regan fired a shot for a double in the bottom of the third. Jennings had an RBI triple that bounced off the back fence to bring Regan home on a triple. Jennings scored to widen the gap.Lindsay Capozza hung tough on the mound to escape a bases-loaded situation.
The Hurricanes rallied back strongly to score four runs in the fourth. Ariel Willis and Jay both hit doubles to cushion the Hurricane lead. Capozza pitched a strong inning in the fifth, striking out two batters and finishing off with an easy out to first. With the Hurricanes batting, Rocio Tarin hit a standup triple which scored two runs then scored on an overthrow. The Hurricanes defense held the Tornados off the scoreboard with a strong closing effort by Goularte.
