Work continues on the cinder block walls of the Morgan Hill

Construction continues on new city facility
City officials will get a preview of progress being made on one of Morgan Hill’s upcoming facilities next week. On Tuesday, Oct. 18, the City Council and the Parks and Recreation Commission will take a tour of the indoor recreation center construction site at 171 West Edmundson Avenue.

West Coast Contractors, Inc., the contractor for the project, reports this month that workers are making good progress on installing a masonry block wall at the new facility. The gymnasium is more than 75 percent complete, with the slab poured and three of four walls built to full height. Locker rooms are also over 95 percent completed.

The contractor reports site drainage also is nearly complete. Most of the concrete curbs are in place and base rock at the parking lot area is expected shortly, which will enable workers to winterize the site before bad weather arrives.

West Coast plans to have the parking lot and driveways paved to help reduce erosion and muddy conditions once the rains come. West Coast also hopes to complete the gymnasium masonry by the end of this month.

Construction on the $16.7 million IRC began on May 16. When completed, the facility will include a gymnasium, natatorium, fitness room, aerobics room, a senior and youth community use areas. There will also be a full-service kitchen, locker rooms and metal stud framed interior partitions. The building will measure about 52,135 sq. ft.

The project is currently on schedule and within budget. The new IRC is slated for completion August of 2006. Barring unforeseen circumstances, the anticipated grand opening is Sept. 5, 2006.
