– The Live Oak boys team won its first meet of the year by the
narrowest of margins at 70-66 against North Salinas at Hartnell
College on Thursday.
SALINAS – The Live Oak boys team won its first meet of the year by the narrowest of margins at 70-66 against North Salinas at Hartnell College on Thursday.
Live Oak (1-3 TCAL) was led by Jason Alcarez, who will be attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in the fall. Alcarez won the 1600 meter (4:37.84) and came in second in the 800 meter (2:04.75). But the highlight came when he won the long jump event in his first time competing in it this season.
“He was the swing man in surprising North Salinas because of his willingness to do an event hasn’t done all year,” said coach Dean Raymond.
Billy Wong came in first in the 3200 meter and second in the 1600 meter. Both Wong and Alcarez were part of the first-place relay team.
Sophomore Brandon Powell also turned in a strong performance winning the 300 hurdles, coming in second in the 110s and finishing third in high jump.
Kris Mott placed won the 800s and placed second in the 400. Noel Mayor won the triple and 100 meter and finished third in long jump
The Live Oak girls varsity team lost 82.5-45.5. Leanne Lopez led the squad winning the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles with her best times this year. She also placed second in the triple jump. Nichole Weatherford won the 400-meter with a time of 1:07.2.
Sophomore Heather Molyneaux came in second in 100, 200 and long jump.
Rachel Hart placed second in 100 hurdles. Live Oak swept both hurdles. Elizabeth Johanson took second in the 300 and third in the 100. Justine Pingue placed third in the 300 hurdles.
Both Live Oak frosh teams are 3-1. The boys won 71-55, and the girls picked up a 90-8 win (score is correct).
Mark Curtis won the pole vault event and 400 meter race. Alton Sumpter won the 100 and 200 races. Justin Martin won the discuss and was third in 400.
The frosh girls won first place in all nine events as the majority of Vikings were moved up to varsity.
Azucena Atanacio won disc and shot. Mattie Smith won 400 and long jump. Lesley DeDios took first in the 100 and 200 and triple jump. Ashley Cesar won the pole vault and high jump.
Shannon Kelly won 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. And Lisa Herrera won the 800 and 3200.
