Accident: Jason Sopaga, 20, of Marina was charged with felony DUI after an accident early Sunday morning that seriously injured his passenger, Ben Leauma, 22, also of Marina.
Sopaga was driving a Toyota Corolla southbound on Hwy. 101 near the Coyote Creek area north of the Coyote Creek bridge when he drove into the center divider, ended up in the northbound lane then shot between the northbound and southbound lanes off of the highway into the creek.
Sopaga was pinned in the vehicle, but Leauma walked up to the highway to flag down another vehicle. The call for help came at 2:35 a.m. Leauma was taken to San Jose Medical Center with an open head wound, and Sopaga was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center with multiple internal injuries.
MORGAN HILL POLICE
Threats: A resident of the 16700 block of Barnell Avenue reported receiving harassing phone calls, approximately 30 per day, for five days. The report was taken on March 26 at 3:22 p.m.
• A resident of the Creekside Village Townhomes reported receiving harassing phone calls for three days. She told police the calls start at 11:20 p.m. and continue until 1 a.m. A female caller asks to speak to the resident’s grandson, but when the resident tells her not to call at that time or call him at home, the caller uses foul language and continues to call. The report was taken at 5:15 p.m. on March 31.
Burglary: A Morgan Hill City employee reported an attempted break-in at the Villas offices at City Hall. One window in the Finance Department office was broken, and someone entered through a window in the Housing Department. Nothing was stolen. The report was taken on March 26 at 2:57 p.m.
• Someone from Central Coast Nursery reported someone cut the lock to the front gate of the business and stole several trees worth $4,000. The report was taken at 8:40 a.m. on March 28.
• Someone reported two suspects trying to break into the storage area of the Marie Callender’s restaurant. The suspects told the person they were playing “hide ‘n seek.” Two kegs were recovered, and officers searched for the suspects in a nearby field but did not find them. The report was taken on March 28 at 11:43 p.m.
• A Live Oak High teacher reported $100 was stolen from a locked file cabinet in one of the portable classrooms. The report was taken at 7:09 a.m. on March 31.
• A resident of Leptis Circle reported that on March 24, he noticed a screen from one of his windows was bent and out of place, and he conducted an inventory of his home but did not notice anything missing. On March 31, he told police he noticed his DVD, stereo and some jewelry missing. The report was taken on March 31 at 4:51 p.m.
Vandalism: The owner of Gunter Brothers Feed Company reported that the back fence was knocked over and a door on the shed in the rear was also broken. The report was taken on March 23 at 10:48 p.m.
• A resident of the 17400 block of Calle Mazatan reported that someone scratched the driver and passenger side doors of her Chevy Tahoe. The report was taken at 3:02 p.m. on March 27.
• A construction company employee reported someone poured an unknown substance into the engines of four pieces of construction equipment, causing the engines to “seize up,” while the equipment was on the job site at Watsonville Road/Santa Teresa. The report was taken on March 28 at 11:25 a.m.
• A resident of Angelica Way reported someone shattered the rear window of the resident’s Acura Integra. The report was taken at 1:03 p.m. on March 28.
• A resident of Calle Atavio reported that she returned home to find the side door to the garage had been kicked in. The report was taken on March 28 at 9:42 p.m.
• A resident of the 16700 block of Barnell Avenue reported that someone “shot out” the windshield, front fender and door of his Ford truck. The report was taken at 6:17 p.m. on March 30.
• Someone from a construction company reported someone poured an unknown substance into the engine of a construction vehicle while it was on the job site at Hale Avenue/Llagas. The vehicle would not start as a result. The report was taken on March 31 at 9:25 a.m.
Tampering with a vehicle: A Morgan Hill resident reported the rear license plate was taken from the resident’s vehicle while it was parked at the Trail Dust BBQ. The report was taken at 11:26 a.m. on March 29.
Battery: A 12-year-old girl called police to report her mother’s boyfriend was at the residence pushing her mother around. The mother was crying and upset. The report was taken on March 28 at 7:04 a.m.
Auto burglary: An employee of the KMart reported he saw two men in the parking lot breaking into two cars and taking stereos and other items out. He gave a description of the suspects and their vehicle to the police. He told police they left the parking lot and got on Hwy. 101 headed toward Gilroy. Shortly afterwards, the CHP received a call from a motorist on Hwy. 101 reporting a vehicle matching the description of the suspects’ vehicle passed her speeding and then exited at San Martin. The report was taken on March 20 at 12:58 p.m.
• A resident of Wright Avenue reported he left his tools loose in the bed of his truck overnight and the tools were stolen. The report was taken at 8:24 a.m. on March 24.
Stolen vehicle: A Morgan Hill resident reported someone stole his keys while he was in Giancarlos restaurant and stole his Honda Accord. He told police he had his keys with him in the restaurant. The report was taken at 10:26 p.m. on March 23.
Fraud: A Morgan Hill resident reported someone has hacked into his personal and business computers and locked him out, stealing his business accounts, personal information and tax information. He told police he had hired professionals to try to regain access, but they were unsuccessful. The report was taken on March 19 at 3:14 p.m.
• A Morgan Hill resident reported he went to the Social Security office and was told someone has been using his Social Security number. The report was taken at 3:36 on March 20.
• A Morgan Hill resident reported when she met a man to buy vintage jewelry from him on March 7, she thinks she dropped her ATM card in the back of his trunk. She said the card was used within 30 minutes of the exchange. She has called the man to ask if he has her card, and he has not returned her call. The report was taken on March 20 at 3:41 p.m.
