A 22-year-old Morgan Hill man is in Santa Clara County Jail after a dangerous drive from Gilroy into Morgan Hill Saturday night.
“We’re very fortunate he didn’t kill someone or seriously injure someone,” Morgan Hill Police Cmdr. Terrie Booten said Monday of Eric Aranda, who was arrested at nearly 11pm for driving under the influence, driving on a suspended license and reckless driving.
Booten said an officer noticed a vehicle driving erratically with its hazard lights on, eastbound on Watsonville Road. When the officer pulled the vehicle over and was getting out of the police cruiser, Aranda took off, Booten said, as fast as the car would go, considering it was driving on three wheels and one rim.
Aranda drove through a drainage ditch, striking a sign, then ran “numerous red traffic signals” as he drove on Monterey Road. At Monterey Road and Tennant Avenue, she said, he ran the red light again, but someone was pulling out, and he “took evasive action, then struck the curb and a tree.”
