The South County Dayworker Center has put out the call for qualified people with compassion to volunteer service on the center’s first Board of Directors. With the center soon to be opening its doors, it is time for the “Committee” that has formulated the center for the past two years to transform into a professional board.

A board of up to 15 members will provide overall guidance and oversight in the functions of the center. Community members who can provide guidance from varying perspectives are encouraged to apply.

The center now has a lease to construct an interim facility on the corner of East Main and Depot avenues. Using donated portable buildings as its first home, the center is scheduled to open in the fall.

Currently, workers stand out in all weather, without proper restroom facilities, and have no access to services that might improve their situation.

The center will also be designed to ease problems that arise between worker and employer from the language barrier. It will hold English as a Second Language classes and help the workers toward citizenship.

New Executive Director America Romero has brought renewed energy into the effort and has already started to serve the dayworkers before the ground is even broken on the structure.

“America has done a tremendous job on a number of fronts in a short amount of time,” said Julian Mancias, chair of the committee. “She is already part of the team and we have every confidence that this center is going to succeed.”

Those interested in receiving an application to the board should contact Anthony Eulo at 779-7247 or te***@************ca.gov/ The deadline for returning applications is Aug. 1.
