SAN JOSE – The Morgan Hill American and National A teams battled through the heat in separate tournaments and will advance to face each other in a game sure to have a lot of fireworks on Friday at 10 a.m.

The American A team wrapped up the San Jose Pacific Pinto Regional Tournament competition at Dartmouth with a first-place finish after going 4-0. In the championship game, Morgan Hill played defeated San Francisco 5-2 behind a solid pitching effort.

Joe Tuttle, Jackson Gion and Sean Schlaefli combined for 12 strikeouts while throwing four scoreless innings.

Schlaefli, Nick Swanson, Jayson Smith and Josiah Wylie shown both offensively and defensively for the American team.

Smith, in center field, threw a runner out at home to Swanson, who put the tag on to get the out.

Smith came up with another gem when he charged a ball in center and threw a strike to Joe Tuttle, the pitcher, covering second base to get an out to get out of an inning.

Shortstop Tommy Naranjo made a nice play to gobble up a grounder and then threw a strike to catcher Lorenzo Aguayo for an out. After the dust settled the runner was called out after originally being called safe to end the inning.

The Morgan Hill squad scored a run in the first and second innings and then three in the fourth inning.

“For the most part, they were a pretty hard scrappy team, and neither could get the one hit to put it away,” said Manager Ray Wylie. “They hung in there and they didn’t give up despite playing in 100-degree heat.”
