SANTA CLARA – The U12 Orchard Valley Tornadoes came back to secure a third-place finish in the Santa Clara Rotary Cup during 100-degree weather.

Tornadoes 2, West Valley Divas 2

The Tornadoes started the tournament with a strong showing against the Divas. Amanda Kline got the Tornadoes on the board with the first goal of the season. JC Clayton scored on a free kick to give the Tornadoes a 2-0 lead.

It looked like that lead would hold up, as the Tornado midfield was dominating play. Clayton, Amanda Whitling, Taylor Johnson, Bella Comin, Lexi MacPhail, Mary Thatcher and Alex Seda all turned in solid performances to control the game for the Orchard Valley team. However, the Divas fought back with two goals to tie the game.

Tornadoes 3, Los Gatos Rowdies 0

The Tornadoes again got on the board first after Clarissa Hammer drove the ball to the goal, and Amanda Kline drilled a loose ball into the net for a 1-0 lead. Taylor Johnson later followed up a corner kick to make it 2-0 Tornadoes, and also closed out the scoring in the second half on a breakaway goal to stretch the lead to 3-0.

That was all the Orchard Valley team would need, as a solid defense, with strong efforts from Cloey LemMon, Sarah Block, Lindsay Pund, and Stephanie Wan, allowed goalie Nichole Downing to post a shutout.

Juventus Destiny 2, Tornadoes 1

On Sunday morning, the Tornadoes dropped a very tough game to the Destiny, as a couple of defensive lapses allowed the Destiny to score a goal in each half.

The Tornadoes scored as Lexi MacPhail moved the ball ahead to Taylor Johnson, who beat the Destiny goalie for the Tornadoes’ lone goal. The loss kept the Tornadoes out of the championship game.

Tornadoes 2, MVAL CyberRays 0

The Tornadoes bounced back in the consolation game to go home with a win to secure third place in the tournament.

Amanda Whitling and JC Clayton relieved Downing in goal, and Downing capitalized by scoring the Tornadoes first goal on a nice assist from Hammer. Hammer later scored on a loose ball in front, and the Orchard Valley team closed out the game without allowing any serious threats from the CyberRays.
