As thunder rolled between the mountain ranges late Monday night and early Tuesday morning, lightning lit up the night sky, a preface to the downpour to come and the storm-related problems Morgan Hill residents woke up to Tuesday morning.
According to Jeff Smith with PG&E, 2208 Morgan Hill residents lost power during the storm.
“There were a lot of lightning strikes around the area,” he said. “Many residents experienced power flickers, but some lost power overnight.”
As of noon Tuesday, all but approximately 100 residents had their power restored. Smith said crews worked that afternoon and had all power restored by Tuesday evening.
“The remaining problems were scattered all around the area,” said Smith. “We call those kinds of things ‘onesies and twosies,’ where it’s just a house here ore there, and we need to go out specifically to the residence or business. Sometimes, it is something simple like in the fuse box, a fuse that just need to be flipped.”
Rosso’s Furniture in the Tennant Station shopping center, which was in the midst of a tent sale, encountered some problems with wind and rain.
Gilroy residents also lost power because of the storm, but had no major problems.
Lightning strikes to a tree on Orchard Drive and electrical wires at a Shell gas station near The Garlic Farm off Monterey Highway were the only storm-related incidents as 6,201 Gilroy homes were blacked out.
The unusual summer thunderstorm was the result of a moisture-filled system moving to California from the southwestern states. But the storms have left the area, and normal summertime weather should continue.
