Arrest: A San Jose man was arrested Sunday evening on several charges after an attempted stop by Morgan Hill police that led to a pursuit and accident. At approximately 9:30 p.m., Officer Steve Pennington was patrolling San Pedro Avenue near San Ramon Drive when he spotted a Ford Ranger pickup traveling at approximately 60 mph in a 35 mph zone. The driver did not stop when Pennington turned on his patrol car’s red light. A brief, with speeds up to 80 mph, end when the pickup crashed into a tree near the north curb of San Pedro Ave.

The driver of the Ford Ranger, Christopher Carpenter, 40, sought to elude police by traveling westbound on San Pedro toward the railroad tracks. He attempted to pass a vehicle on the right but sideswiped it. He then lost control of the pickup.

Carpenter fled on foot into an industrial complex, 195 San Pedro Ave., and was eventually apprehended by officers. He was booked into Santa Clara County jail for recklessly evading a peace officer, misdemeanor hit-and-run, driving under the influence of a drug, resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Carpenter is currently on probation for possession of methamphetamine for sales, under the influence of methamphetamine and possession of paraphernalia, police said.
