Two legendary women of song are coming to Redwood City’s historic Fox Theatre as part of Montalvo’s Spring 2003 season. Singer-songwriter Joan Baez and former Go-Go Belinda Carlisle hit the stage on Feb. 26 and March 15, respectively. Tickets for both concerts are now on on sale.

Joan Baez performs at the Fox Theatre on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 7:30 p.m., as a fundraiser for The Martha Heasley Cox Center For Steinbeck Studies at San Jose State University, the world’s leading archive of Steinbeck material. In conjunction with this event, Baez will be presented with the “…in the souls of the people” Award, which honors artists who represent Steinbeck’s legacy, the dignity of the common people, through their work. The title of this award comes from a passage in Steinbeck’s classic novel,The Grapes of Wrath.

Baez is the first female recipient of this prestigious award. The legendary singer emerged as the popular face of folk music in the early 1960s, headlining festivals and performing at political events. In her career of more than 40 years, she has continued to influence nearly every aspect of popular music. Previous recipients of the “… in the souls of the people” Award are Jackson Browne, Studs Terkel, Arthur Miller, John Sayles and Bruce Springsteen.

Belinda Carlisle first came into the public eye as lead singer of the Go-Gos, a ground breaking all-female band with chart-toppers such as “We Got the Beat” and “Vacation.” Launching a solo career in 1986, Carlisle has continued to have success with hits such as “Mad About You,” “Heaven is aPlace on Earth” and “I Get Weak.” Carlisle performs at the Fox Theatre on Saturday, March 15, at 7:30 p.m.

Montalvo, Silicon Valley’s premier multi-disciplinary arts center, presents concerts year-round at the Fox Theatre in Redwood City as part of its commitment to bringing the best of the arts to the Bay Area.
