The Live Oak boys basketball team rolled through its most lopsided victory this season to improve to 13-2 with a 71-27 trouncing of Sequoia on Friday.

It was the second highest scoring game of the season behind the 83-50 win against Monta Vista in the Bob Hagen Classic. And it was the least amount of points that Live Oak gave up.

“It came down to our defense,” said coach Brett Paolucci. “We practiced on Thursday and had a big talk about playing at a high level of intensity on defense, and we executed in the game. It was nothing special. We just played a straight man-to-man defense.

The 44-point margin was the third highest margin of victory by any Tri-County Athletic League school this year. The largest was a 110-6 (not a typo) defeat of Downtown College Prep of San Jose. North Salinas defeated San Lorenzo Valley 82-36.

Maciek Bratkowski led the way with 17 points for the Acorns, which was more than the top two Sequoia scorers combined. There were 11 different players who scored at least a basket for Live Oak.

“They had some good athletes and some height on the team, Paolucci said.

But the Acorns know Monterey won’t be quite as easy during tonight’s home game.

“We have to handle the ball and not commit turnovers,” Paolucci said. “They will try to full quart press. We have to control the board and not give them any second chances. Our defense will create our offense.”

Wrestling

The young Live Oak wrestling team finished 10th out of 18 teams in the two-day Atascadero tournament.

Chris Horner brought in a second place in 171s Matt Mulert (145 pounds) and Dan Benevento(160 pounds) both had fourth-place finishes.

“I lot of people have figured out that they are capable of stepping up to the next level,” said coach Brian Allen, whose squad play at Gilroy Wednesday.
