LO wrestling and girls hoops lose.
Live Oak was defeated by Salinas in a dual match on Thursday at Salinas, 51-19.
“I though we would be able to win a close one,” said coach Ron Nichols. “But we were riddled with injuries and mental mistakes. We made them look a lot better than we should have. But Salinas is a mature program with some good wrestlers.”
Live Oak was without wrestlers in 114, 132, 152, 191 and 217 weight classes.
105 – Hondo Dominguez won by decision 9-0; 121- Scott Arnett lost 20-3 by technical fall; 127 – Ishmael Marisclan lost 15-1, 137 – Ashby Shaw was pinned in the third round; 142 – Matt Melert pinned his opponent in the first round at 1:25; 147 – Matt Henderson pinned his opponent in the second round after scoring 13 points, 154 – Pat Courtner was pinned in the second round, 162 – Dan Wahl won a 6-2 decision, 173 – Chris Horner was pinned in first round; Hevyweight – Stanley Kalt was pinned.
“I went through and did a couple what if its,” Nichols said. “I figured out we could have beat these guys 33-29 if we didn’t have the mistakes. The mental errors are what we have been working on.”
In the Overfelt tournament of 30 schools last weekend, Live Oak had two wrestlers who medalled. Horner took a fourth place, and Henderson placed third. Dominguez also had a strong performance with a sixth-place finish.
“It was impressive to see them working that hard and then seeing results,” Nichols said.
Horner went through the tourney limit of five matches, losing just once.
He pinned his opponent from Aragon in the second round. In the second match against Oak Grove, Horner made a little mistake and was pinned in the second round. That put him into the loser’s bracket.
Horner pinned his opponents In the third and fifth rounds and recorded a 21-3 technical fall against his opponent from South San Francisco.
Henderon also went 4-1. He lost to the No. 1 seed from Shafter, but defeated the No. 3 seed from San Jose High School in an exciting 10-9 decision. The match went into overtime before Horner recorded a takedown.
Live Oak will be at home against Palma on Tuesday, but the Acorns will still be without wrestlers in the 114,130 and 215 classes.
“Everybody in TCALS is very competitive,” Nichols said. “Three out of six teams will be ranked top 10 in CCS.”

Live Oak defeated 56-30 at North Salinas on Saturday. Live Oak was outshot from behind the arc 5-1.
“They extend everything out on you and try to trap you,” said coach Paul Cachopo. “But we handled that fine. We got to get the ball in the basket more.”
Live Oak is still without Katrina Friebel, who is recovering from a knee injury. It is going to be examined this week, but Cachapo said that if she comes back it won’t be toward the end of the season.
“It has been tough on us the last few games,” Cachopo said. “The score doesn’t reflect how we played. We’ve executed well.”
Live Oak (5-9, 0-2 TCAL) will be at home Wednesday against Salinas.
“We have to attack them in the halfcourt really well,” Cachopo said. “We have to be really tough getting to the glass. There is no slouch in this league. Our spirits are high, and the enthusasm is great.
