The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors has accepted a $496,779 grant from the U.S. Federal Office of Justice Programs for Domestic Violence Victims Service.

“This is a particularly important boon to the county,” said Supervisor Liz Kniss, District 5. “It comes at a time when the county is struggling to support important programs.”

The grant is a part of the program “Encourage Arrest Policies and Enforcement of Protection Orders for Victims of Domestic Violence.” It aims to improve the safety of victims and to hold offenders accountable in domestic and dating violence cases.

The program encourages collaboration among criminal justice agencies, victim service providers and community organizations that respond to domestic violence calls. The County’s Office of Women’s Advocacy will oversee the implementation of the grant.

Community partners include Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence, South County advocate Community Solutions and North County advocate Support Network for Battered Women. Language assistance will be provided by Asian Americans for Community Involvement and Maitri which provide support for Pacific Islander communities.

“I’m pleased with the extent of this collaborative partnership,” Kniss said. “Working together we’ll be able to make an enormous difference in our ability to deal with domestic violence.”

“This grant will enable us to work more effectively for victims of domestic violence,” said Erin O’Brien, chief executive officer for Community Solutions.
