“Going in to that game we were playing pretty well,” said Live Oak coach Mark Cummins. We were coming off a phenomenally effort by Muller. There were lot of pro scouts there. We would have liked to gain some momentum going into league.”

Going into league, the Acorns are 5-3. Live Oak will open up its Tri-County Athletic League schedule with a visit to Hollister on Wednesday before Live Oak plays Hollister again in its home league opener Friday.

“We have learned a lot and got a lot of experience in the preseason,” Cummins said. “We are excited to play Hollister. They’re the team to beat.”

The Acorns, who were coming off a two-game losing streak after falling 8-2 to Valley Christian and 6-0 to St. Francis, powered by Santa Clara 5-0 on Thursday. Ryan Muller threw a career game, striking out 20 of the 22 batters he faced in the one-hit complete game.

He gave up a double, and the only other non strikeout was on a ground ball out to second base.

Muller did it offensively as well with two hits. Sean Nourie had two hits including an RBI double. Andrew Cummins in his first varsity game went 1-for-3 with a double.

On Saturday, Live Oak Oak gave up three runs in the first and fourth innings in the loss to Los Altos. Kyle Bennett (2-1) took the loss.

“He had some control trouble,” Cummins said. “That makes him a much better pitcher when he can spot his pitches.”

Nourie and Dave Newton both had doubles. Catcher Chase Perez had three hits. Muller, Cummins and Bryan Jones had two hits.

Live Oak out hit Los Altos 12-6. The Acorns put together a four-run rally in the sixth inning with RBIs by Perez, Hayslip, Jones and Miller. Live Oak got two runners on in the final inning.

Softball

SALINAS – The Acorns lost their first two games of the season in the Salinas tournament last weekend. In the morning Live Oak lost 3-1 to Aptos then fell 14-0 against a strong Mitty team Saturday afternoon. Live Oak is 2-2 overall.

They had on hit in the first game and two hits in the second game. Against Mitty, Live Oak was out hit 11-2 after an eight-run first inning.

The Acorns will compete in the Twin Creeks tournament this weekend.

Volleyball

Live Oak improved to 2-0 in the preseason with a 15-10,15-6, 15-3 win over visiting Wilcox Friday night. Drew Pearson led the way for the Acorns with seven kills. The Acorns will play at Oak Grove tonight.

Swimming

Both Live Oak teams recorded losses in their first match of the season against Hollister Friday afternoon. Both scores were close and were about the same differential. The boys lost 104-81, and the girls were downed 101-84. The JV boys lost 72-41, while the Live Oak girls picked up a 96-87 win.
