United Way Silicon Valley and its South County council hosted a Celebration of a Successful 2002 Workplace Giving Campaign on March 11 at the historic Villa Mira Monte – the old Morgan Hill House. Representatives of corporations, non-profits and governmental agencies heard Mark Walker, CEO of United Way, speak of the importance of the organizations who receive funding. He said that volunteer involvement is so critical to the success of the entire community.

Walker also spoke of renewed energy in United Way and how that has translated into serving even more people.

Attending were Thanh Nguyen, CEO of Paramit; Jeff Perkins, senior vice-president of South Valley National Bank; Erin O’Brien, CEO of Community Solutions; Tom Kinoshita, president of the MH Unified school board; Jim Rogers, president of the Gilroy Unified school board; Dennis Kennedy, mayor of Morgan Hill; Susan Valenta, executive director of the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce; Lisa Jensema, campaign coordinator for the City of Gilroy; Helen Barcellos of Go Kids Inc. and Delores Ferriera and Jack Foley of South County Housing.

It is especially gratifying to note that businesses who have not partnered with United Way in the past have stepped up to the challenge and either had campaigns this year, or have taken steps to do so in 2003.

The following are especially to be thanked for their Celebration donations: Wine: Guglielmo Winery, Canapés: Sodexho Marriott, Violin Music: Arundathi Gururajan, Singing: Garlic City Harmony and the Morgan Hill Historical Society

The United Way South County Council is always looking for new members and for businesses that would like to get involved in serving our community. Details: Laura Lundy of Washington Mutual at 778-9995, Connie Rogers at 842-8494 or Pi Slverstein at 683-4319.
