Leadership Morgan Hill is accepting applications for its Class of 2006, a nine-month leadership training and development program starting in January. Leadership Morgan Hill is dedicated to inspiring future leaders to community service. The Board of Directors is looking for individuals who are committed to the Morgan Hill community and are passionate and motivated to grow in their leadership skills.
Applicants must either live or work in the Morgan Hill area and be willing to contribute their skills, knowledge and expertise for the betterment of the community.
“Each participant can expect to come away with in-depth knowledge of the local political, economic and governmental structures of the community,” said Steve Tate, Leadership Board President. “They will know how to get things done in the community, they will learn a lot more about themselves and they will form some bonds with classmates that will last a lifetime.”
Some highlights for last year’s class included:
n Riding a shift in a police squad car and touring the county jail facility as a part of the day-long program on law and justice;
n Simulating part of a day as members of the city council, dealing with the facts of a real city issue and coming to a recommended course of action to pass along to the real city council;
n Going on a two-day trip to Sacramento with briefings by our local senator and assembly member;
n Facing television cameras in a crisis situation during media training
In addition to course work, the 2005 class completed an outside community project upgrading the downtown recycling containers to be much more recognizable as recycling only and much harder to contaminate with regular trash. They also included a public awareness component to heighten understanding of the benefits of recycling.
The Leadership program also provides training in skills to solve problems, take risks, resolve conflicts, serve on non-profit boards and build teams.
To learn more about the program, its benefits and requirements, there will be a one hour orientation session at Villa Mira Monte, the historic Morgan Hill House at 17860 N. Monterey Rd. on Monday, Oct. 24 at 5:30pm. Anyone who may be interested in Leadership for 2006 or anytime in the future is welcome to attend.
Applications and brochures are available at www.morganhill.org, (follow the Leadership Morgan Hill link), or by calling Cricket Rubino at 778-7211. Members of the Board of Directors, as well as alumni, are available to talk with prospective applicants, also arranged by calling Cricket.
Last year’s class filled up, so please plan to apply as soon as possible. The application deadline for submission is Nov. 15.
Leadership Morgan Hill selects participants from diverse backgrounds and experiences who have a commitment to community service and potential for leadership. The Board of Directors interviews applicants and evaluates a variety of criteria during the selection process. These include personal motivation, maturity, a directed idealism, and leadership ability.
The Board of Directors believes that diversity enhances all of the program’s activities. As a result, the program acknowledges a special responsibility to train leaders from among traditionally under-represented groups. The program welcomes candidates without regard to gender, color, race, age, sexual orientation, religion, disability, national or ethnic origin, political belief, or veteran status.
