The Live Oak girls volleyball team defeated North Salinas on Monday to end a four-game losing streak, winning in straight sets 25-12, 25-13, 25-11.

“This is a big win for us,” Interim Coach James Uthes said. “They played really well as a team. We only made one or two mistakes.”

Juliette Bowers led the Acorns (3-5 TCAL) in the victory, playing strong in the middle, Uthes said.

Bowers recorded 8 kills, while teammate Kristen Russ also played well with seven kills of her own.

On Wednesday, the Acorns lost to Salinas (7-1) in straight sets, 23-25,15-25, 5-25.

Uthes said Salinas is a very good team and had a definite height advantage over Live Oak.

Despite the physical advantage the Cowboys had, Uthes said with a little luck the match could have been a lot closer than what the final outcome showed.

In the first game of the match – which the Acorns lost by two points, 23-25 – Uthes said the referee missed some out calls against Salinas, then called Live Oak for lifting after the ball was already hit and gone.

Uthes said the non-calls on the Cowboys and the bad call against his team helped the Salinas, who never looked back after that first game.

“If we had the first game, we would have had all the momentum,” Uthes said. “Since we lost that first game the momentum went down and we just couldn’t pick it up.”

Head Coach Laura Coleman missed this week’s games due to personal reason. She will be back with the team next week.

The Acorns have two games remaining in league play.

Live Oak is scheduled to host Notre Dame on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Their season finale is slated to be in Gilroy on Thursday, also at 6:30 p.m.
