A father and son were driving down Foothill Avenue in San Martin
Thursday night of last week when a stranger pulled up behind them
and rammed their pickup three times, according to the sheriff
’s department.
Deputy sheriffs arrested William Ellery, 42, and charged him with assault with a deadly weapon, a felony, and vandalism, a misdemeanor (the latter for allegedly damaging two mailboxes with his truck). Ellery had a San Jose address but told deputies he was homeless, living in the South Valley area.

The father and son reported that it was just before 8:30 p.m. when Ellery rammed his truck into theirs once, then twice. They sped up to escape him, but he sped up, too, and rammed their truck a third time. They said they turned around and could see an angry look on his face.

The father and son turned from Foothill onto San Martin Avenue, and so did Ellery, but then Ellery lost control of his truck and drove into a ditch, damaging two mailboxes. The alleged victims drove on until they saw a sheriff’s deputy conducting a traffic stop. They flagged him down and explained what had just happened. Deputies arrived on the scene to find Ellery talking with area residents about their mailboxes, and they arrested him.

After some questioning, deputies determined Ellery and the alleged victims did not know each other in any way.

No one was injured in the incident.
