The City Council Wednesday approved spending up to $175,000 to help the Dayworker Committee and Weston Miles Architects fund off-site improvements on Depot Street. The vote was 3-2 with Councilmen Steve Tate and Larry Carr dissenting.

The committee will install two portables on the vacant lot at Main Avenue and Depot Street as a dayworker center.

Charles Weston and Lesley Miles purchased the Isaacson building and are effecting a complete renovation into offices and possible retail, conference or restaurant space. They have also invited the Dayworker Committee to erect the center on the property until a suitable and permanent site can be located.

However, along with property improvements and new construction, goes the installation of curbs, sidewalks and gutters. Weston Miles will secure its part of the loan with its building and plans to repay the full amount along with a $350,000 short-term loan, within three years.

The Dayworker Committee has no such collateral though some city grant funds are reserved for the center.

Tate was concerned that the project was becoming a city project and was concerned that the city would get the money back only when the center goes away.

Kennedy said all city money will be spent for permanent infrastructure improvements that will remain if and when the center moves on.
