Women are natural caregivers who will sacrifice their own needs to put their families first. So when there’s not enough money to pay for health care for everyone, or not enough time or energy to take care of daily life and their own well-being, women often put themselves last on the priority list.
The result is a crisis in women’s health care that is magnified among the uninsured, working poor and minority communities of Silicon Valley.
The new Women’s Health Fund provides a way for women (and men) to help local girls and women receive basic health care services. The fund is sponsored by The Health Trust, which will issue grants to local agencies providing direct services to girls and women in need. The goal is to raise $75,000 by mid November.
The Health Trust recognized the interest of women helping women at annual women’s health events it has co-sponsored for the past several years. In February, 2004, it will present its own all-day “Seasons of Life” women’s health conference and will announce the first grants made by the new Women’s Health Fund.
A small group of successful Silicon Valley women launched the Women’s Health Fund with initial contributions. The Health Trust is now reaching out to others in the community who want to join the effort to provide health care services to those who are not receiving them for one reason or another.
Santa Clara Valley is fortunate to have many organizations offering different health care services to women, according to Dick King, vice president of fund development for The Health Trust.
