After being forced to move to Gilroy for their game against
Alisal, the Live Oak Acorns have been cleared to play their
homecoming game at home against Hollister tonight.
The Acorns are coming off a disappointing 20-20 tie to Alisal last Friday.
They are still looking for that first win that has eluded them going back to the 2001-2002 season.
According to Head Coach Glen Webb, the team has been focused this past week with all the homecoming festivities. He says the team will look to finish what they started against Alisal.
“The game left the kids with a feeling of unfinished business,” said Webb. “(The tie) gave them the confidence to know they are deserving. They have to go out and get it.
Hollister will be a tough assignment for the Acorns. Last Friday, the Haybalers improved their standings to 3-1-1 when they defeated Monterey for their third straight win.
Despite Live Oak’s poor record, Haybalers Head Coach Chirs Cameron says that his team will not take this game for granted.
“We’re going to take them seriously, as if they were undefeated,” said Cameron. “We just have to play mistake free football and come out strong from the get-go.”
Webb says when they have played Hollister in the past, games were decided on big plays that went against Live Oak.
“Our games against Hollister have been hard fought and competitive,” said Webb. “Last year’s game was close; they had a defensive score and a special teams score. It comes down to big plays, We emphasize that they take it one play at a time. Don’t get discouraged if were down, and don’t give up if we’re ahead.”
The Acorns have been banged up during the past weeks.
Adam Reza will be on restricted play after suffering a swollen ankle during the game against North County.
Zach Freitas has been out with a broken hand.
Replacing Freitas has been Sophomore Jeff Schroedter who stepped into the tight end roll. Webb says Schroedter has been eager and looking fine in practice.
Webb says that despite most of the team nursing bumps and bruises, everyone of them will give all they have in tonight’s game.
“They have the courage, tenacity and pain tolerance,” said Webb. “They are all doing what they can. It’s hard to heal 100 percent during the season, but they will all be playing hard.”
The 0-4-1 Acorns have not won a game dating back to the 2001-2002 season, and Webb says that each one on the team is eager to break that string. He says Live Oak will be unstoppable once they get their first notch in the win column.
“Winning is addictive,” said Webb. “But you can’t get addicted without the first fix. It’s a feeling that is hard to simulate. We’re just two or three plays from being right there.”
According to Webb, the Live Oak field has been cleared for play for both the junior varsity and varsity teams for the rest of the year. Freshman football has been denied play for the remainder of the season.
