In response to the June 4 letter to the editor in the Morgan Hill Times, we strongly disagree with the opinion of Mr. Abrams regarding the treatment of students who participate in this “recreational pinching.”
To read Mr. Abrams account, one might envision this recreational pinching as playful folly between consenting adolescent students. In reality, this “recreational pinching” better known as “titty twisting” is both painful and humiliating to the students who fall victim to this activity and silently carry the bruising of this adolescent assault in order to “fit in.”
Secondly, for someone who is against bullies, do you understand pinching to the point of leaving a bruise is bullying. We need not look very far to see where bullying, intimidation and physical assault has led to horrible outcomes on school campuses throughout this nation.
This recreational pinching may seem innocent enough, but do you really know what emotional impact it may be having on the student receiving the unwanted pinch for the fifth time that day?
Thirdly, if the assistant principal wants to call in the campus police to make a point with students about what is and isn’t acceptable behavior, we say go for it.
We were all taught in kindergarten to keep our hands to ourselves. A lesson we should all try to remember and reinforce at home.
Lastly, this practice of titty twisting is wide spread at Martin Murphy Middle School and it needs to stop. We applaud the assistance principal for doing the thankless job of disciplining to the masses in an effort to keep our school a safe place for our children to learn.
