MODESTO – The Silicon Valley Legends put together an impressive performance and took second place in the recent Super Series California State Championships.
The Legends are an 11U tournament baseball team affiliated with the Silicon Valley Baseball Association and comprised of players from Morgan Hill, Gilroy, and San Martin.
“The tournament was a strong field of 16 teams, and our goal was to finish in the top four to qualify for the Super Series National Championships later this year – a tough task in itself.” said manager Bill George. “The fact we had the national champs down 5-3 into the sixth inning of the championship game is a real testament to the quality of play of which these kids are capable.”
The weekend began against the Garlic City Bandits, another 11U team. Many of the two team’s players attend school together and have competed against each other in Morgan Hill Pony Baseball. The familiarity and the nerves were on display as the teams battled to a 4-4 tie going into the bottom of the seventh.
With two on and two out, the Legends Chris Bradley launched a drive deep into the right field gap to drive in the winning run and close out the game 5-4.
The Legends had a 9-4 victory over San Ramon Baseball and a 10-2 loss to the Fresno Storm to finish 2-1 in pool play and move on to the championship bracket.
They used a combination of strong pitching from Matt Carroll, Justin Bernard, Chris Bradley and Mike Singleton; excellent defense from Nick George, Bryan Bradley and Rick Long; and the hot bats of Dylan Frechette, Greg Hamik and Max Crowley to move through the championship bracket.
In the first game of the single elimination championship bracket, the Legends faced a very tough Delta Rebels team. In a classic pitching duel, the Legends prevailed 3-2. With the victory over the Rebels, the Legends moved on to another familiar foe, the Hollister Quakes.
An all-around effort gave the Legends a 10-2 win to help them move on to the championship game against the Sacramento Jax. In that game, the Legends took an early lead over the Sacramento Jax.
But ultimately championship hardware would have to wait for another day as the Jax prevailed 9-5.
