Robert was born October 7, 1924, in Dewar, Okla., to Charles O. and Margaret P. Bailey. The family moved to Hollister in 1933 where Robert grew up and attended Southside School. He was a graduate of San Benito High School before entering the U.S. Navy in 1942. Robert served in the United States Navy overseas during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946 as a Storekeeper D Second Class USNR.

He married Shirley M. Campbell in May of 1946 and had a wonderful 57 years with her. They had three children, Judith, Linda and Robert, Jr. The family moved to the Morgan Hill area before returning to Hollister in 1962 where he lived until his death.

Robert joined the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America in 1961 where he worked on various large construction projects such as the Hyatt Regency Hotel of the Monterey Bay, Defense Language Institute, Fort Ord Hospital and the Cabrillo and Hartnell colleges. His jobs also included the San Benito County Courthouse and the Spring Grove School.

Robert favorite hobby was hunting and he was a member of the National Rifle Association.

Robert loved his family, served his country with great pride, and helped build a part of America. Robert lived his life by setting an example of what a true family man was. His legacy will live on within the hearts of everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his daughters and their husbands Judith and Berton Tompkins of Los Banos, Linda and David Harris of Lancaster; mother-in-law Olive Thomas of Hollister; grandchildren Lori Reap of Euless, Texas, Shannon and Matthew Marshall, Matthew Harris, Maranda Nance, Paul and Lisa Harris, all of Lancaster, and David and Veronica Harris of Meridian; his most precious great-grandchildren Austin Marshall, Lucas, Sarah and Jarod Harris all of Lancaster, and Cassandra and Brook Harris of Meridian.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Shirley M. Bailey; and son, Robert E. Bailey Jr.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 20, at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home in Hollister. Inurnment will be at the IOOF Cemetery in Hollister.

Arrangements and cremation are through Black Cooper.
