Polish transfer Maciek Bratkowski has helped solidify the Acorns’ post presence this year.
The 6-foot-9 senior is third on the team in scoring, averaging 8.38 points behind Miles Curley (12.3 avg.) and Joel Wright (11.9 avg.).
Bratkowski saw limited time last year with Demantha Catholic School, an all-boys school in Maryland, because of an almost constant ankle injury that he had to have in casted twice.
Bratkowski, who was introduced to the sport at a young age by his dad, played for legendary basketball coach and Hall of Famer Morgan Wooten, whose team has compiled an .868 overall winning percentage in his 47 years.
This year Bratkowski has made the most of his time, while splitting time with fellow big man Drew Pearson, who averages 7.42 points.
Even when teams have found a way to shut him down, Bratkowski has still found ways to be successful.
“It has been tough because sometimes they double and triple team me,” Bratkowski said. “I just try to seal off the post and attack the basket. If they don’t want me to score, I will play defense. But I am still going to look for ways to score.”
One of the main differences playing ball in the United States is the speed of the game, Bratkowski said. This year he has fit right in with the Acorns.
“We’re really coming together and understanding each other,” Bratkowski said. “It is good playing against other big guys.”
Bratkowski said he has received a few letters from Division 1 schools in Maryland and New York, but right now just wants to finish his senior year.
