New books

Birdbrain Amos by Delaney: So how do you become known as “birdbrain?” Start by having bugs drive you crazy, advertise for a bird to remove them, and finally hire the first bird that comes along—who then makes a nest on your head!

Georgie Lee by Denslow: Georgie Lee is a cow, but not just any cow. She is smart and funny and nice. At least, that’s what J.D. thinks after spending the summer on his grandmother’s farm.

Trouble at Betts Pets by Easton: Aaron and snooty Sharon join together to solve the mystery of the disappearing animals from Betts Pets. One-by-one, the animals are vanishing from their cages.

Funny Frank by King-Smith: Frank is a barnyard chick with a dream—he wants to swim like a duck. With the help of his human friends, a custom-fit wet suit, and a pair of flippers, he becomes the speediest bird in the water.

Gooney Bird Greene by Lowry: Gooney Bird Greene came from China on a flying carpet, got diamond earrings at a palace, and even directed an orchestra before school started. All very true stories. Really!

The Gold-Threaded Dress by Marsden: Oy is Thai and the new kid at school who longs to fit in. She is invited to be in a popular club, but only if she lets the girls try on her traditional, ink silk dress.

Lulu’s Hat by Meddaugh: Once in every generation someone in Lulu’s family is born with “the magician’s touch” and able to do “real magic.” And now she discovers she has a knack with hat tricks.

The Boy Who Could Fly Without a Motor by Taylor: As the son of a lighthouse keeper, Jon is the loneliest 9-year-old boy on Earth. If only he could fly and have some real adventures.

Old favorites

Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Atwater; The Velveteen Rabbit by Bianco; Freckle Juice by Blume; Ramona the Pest by Cleary; The Hundred Dresses by Estes.; Catwings by LeGuin; Sarah Plain and Tall by MacLachlan; and Little House in the Big Woods by Wilder.

All of these books are in the library’s juvenile fiction area. Ask a children’s librarian to show you where to find these books the next time you visit the library. And, don’t forget to pick up a reading list for your child, grades 1 through 8.
