Capping off her junior season in grand style, Live Oak High’s Cobbie Jones captured first place in the 800 meters at the prestigious Adidas Golden West Invitational at Folsom High north of Sacramento on Sunday.
Jones turned in a fine 2:10.54, her second-best time in the event.
“She did better than we expected,” Live Oak coach Dean Raymond said.
After competing in the California state track and field finals at Sacramento City College the previous weekend, Jones backed off her intense training a little to allow herself time to recover from the grueling, two-day state finals, according to Raymond.
“I think part of it was not having to run on back-to-back days, that helped some,” Raymond said. “I think it allowed her to be a little fresher.”
Jones edged Danielle Bradley of King’s Academy, Fla. in the event. Bradley ran a 2:10.79 to take second place.
The event, which draws top high school athletes from all over the United States, was supposed to be a chance for Jones to compete against Warrenton, Va.’s Sarah Bowman, who owns the top 800 time (2:04.9) in the nation this year.
But Bowman didn’t show up, Raymond said.
Jones, who made her third straight trip to the state track finals this season, finished sixth overall the previous weekend.
