In 2001-2002 the Senior PGA tour Sieble Classic was held at
Coyote Creek Golf Club. The players experienced some unseasonable
like weather conditions, cold, windy, rainy, and even an occasional
snow flurry. Spending most of the time on the driving range, I
noticed most of the players preparing for the week to come. Lee
Trevino arrived on Wednesday afternoon with 25 clubs in his bag
trying to decide what clubs to use for the week. He was putting on
a clinic for everyone on the range
– even his fellow touring professionals were admiring what he
was doing with the golf ball. I had never meet Mr. Trevino prier to
that week. So, while I was watching this exhibition, he noticed my
nametag – Don Leone Director of Instruction.

Lee came over, shook my hand, and said, come over here Mr. Director of Instruction and let me give you a lesson.

I was speechless. He said the key to keeping the ball under the wind is as follows.

First, choke halfway down on the grip.

Move the ball back in your stance one or two inches.

Use a club or two more than you think.

But most importantly, swing easy.

The weekend golfer tries to swing to hard. The harder you swing, the more the ball spins, and the higher it flies.

Spending a few minutes with him, he made me feel like I had known him for 20 years. It’s an experience I will never forget.

The wind will blow in the summer afternoon hours at Coyote Creek. So next time you’re on the practice tee and the wind is blowing, try working on these techniques.
