The Acorns have an opportunity to continue their successful ways in their final non-league tune-up when they square off against Santa Clara (1-1) tonight at 7.
The Bruins had a bye last week after losing 20-14 to Santa Teresa in Week 2. They opened the season with a 23-7 win over Leland and are hoping to get on track before opening league play against Wilcox.
Senior running back Vince Pereira has led the way for Santa Clara. He’s racked up 153 yards and two touchdowns through the first two games. Senior quarterback David Gurrola has been solid, completing 10-of-18 passing for 63 yards and one touchdown.
Morgan Yee, a 6-foot-4, 180-pound junior defensive back, has grabbed two interceptions to anchor the Bruins’ defense.
Live Oak has plenty of offensive weapons that it can lean on. Senior running back Kevin Abbott has been spectacular so far this season, racking up 287 yards and four touchdowns in the Acorns first two games.
Senior Jeff Mounteer has proven to be a weapon with his leg and his hands. He booted three field goals last week, including a 46-yarder, and added a 15-yard touchdown reception. He’s a perfect 6-for-6 on PAT attempts this season and has scored 21 of Live Oak’s 51 points this season while leading the team with 90 yards receiving. Nic Muhn is second on the team with three catches for 51 yards.
Senior quarterback Chris Nicholls 145 yards and a touchdown on the season, but has completed only 10 of his 31 passes. Junior Timothy O’Rourke was 2-of-2 for 25 yards and a touchdown in his limited duty last week.
